Crunch Into Fall With Homemade Apple Chips

This recipe brings together the classic autumnal flavor combination of fresh apples and warm cinnamon, reminiscent of a warm apple crisp.

You can bake up these treats last minute for a fall harvest bash or afternoon snack. They even work great as a summer, beach snack.

These cozy simple snacks are sure to be a hit with everyone. Who wouldn't like the sweet and tart combination of fall apples and yummy cinnamon sugar? Plus, nothing smells better than cinnamon treats baking in the fall. If that sounds irresistible, you would probably love my mini apple pie school snack recipe too.

With their simplicity these fruity chips are the perfect baking project for young hands to help with. They're easy, quick and fun to make.

Kids can help select the apples, mix the cinnamon and sugar, coat and place the apple slices, and, of course, taste test! Bag these up for lunches or set them out on the counter for a simple and healthy grab and go bite.

    Ingredients

This recipe uses 3 simple ingredients:

    • apples - You can use your favorite type of apple or an assortment (green, honeycrisp and pink lady all work well). Use fresh, crisp apples for the best texture.
    • sugar - I usually use white sugar but you can also use brown sugar, cane sugar or coconut palm sugar.
    • ground cinnamon - Optional but it adds to the warm, fall flavor profile.

How to Make Cinnamon Apple Chips

Cinnamon sugar in bowl with small wooden spoon.

Step 1. Preheat. Preheat oven to 105ºC/225ºF. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

    Sliced apples in bowl.

Step 2. Slice. Core and slice the apples thinly, leaving the skin on.

Chef's Note: You can remove the core if you prefer ring-shaped chips or leave it in for a more natural look.

Sliced apples with cinnamon sugar on baking sheet.

Step 3. Arrange Slices. Arrange the apple slices on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the apple slices. Use as much or as little as you like.

Sliced, dried apple chips on cooling rack.

Step 4. Bake and Cool. Bake in the preheated oven until the apple slices are dried, slightly brittle and the edges curl up, about 1 hour or more. Transfer the apple chips to a wire rack to cool and crisp up.

Chef's Note: I usually need more than one baking sheet to fit all of the apple slices.

Step 5. Serve. Serve the cinnamon apple chips!

    Joss' Tips

    • I like to slice the apples just before baking, before they start to turn brown.
    • A mandolin works great for slicing the apples thinly to ensure even baking and I highly recommend it! Be sure to use a hand guard when slicing.
    • If you're keeping the core in the apples, be sure to remove any seeds that don't fall out when slicing.
    • The baking time can vary, depending on the thickness of the apple slices. The thinner the slices, the less time it takes to dehydrate and crisp them up.
    • If they feel chewy, they likely need more time in the oven to fully dehydrate. When done right, they should have a nice crunch without being too hard.
    • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and help with more even crisping. It's optional but helpful, especially with an older, stained pan.

    Recipe FAQs

Are apple chips better than potato chips?

Baking them in the oven makes them healthier than fried potato chips. As for flavor, it depends on whether you're craving sweet or salty.

    How do you store them?

Apple chips can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or pantry for up to 1 week or 2.

    Can you freeze apple chips?

Yes! They can be frozen for up to a year, allowing you to enjoy the flavors of your fall harvest all year long.

Do you eat them on their own?

This is the best way to eat them but you can also enjoy your homemade cinnamon apple chips as a topping for oatmeal or yogurt, or a crunchy addition to salads!
