In my house, we love French toast and we love Nutella, so I combined these two goods in delicious ways with this recipe for electric skillet French toast stuffed with chocolate-hazelnut spread.
Filled French toast is a thing of beauty, this Nutella sandwich being no exception. Crispy and sweet on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, and all of it complimented by that deliciously nutty and chocolaty hazelnut spread. It's my kind of full breakfast.
I make them in an electric skillet for convenience and even heating. If you don't have one yet, take a look at some of my top electric frying pan reviews, Oster electric skillet reviews or the best ceramic electric skillets.

What is Stuffed French Toast?
French toast is one of those universally delicious foods. Plain or fancy, simple or complicated, syrup or no; there's really no wrong way to go about it. That being said, there definitely are some ways of preparing this tasty treat that one might consider a bit more decadent.
Enter stuffed French toast: a delicious creation sandwiching two slices of French toast together stuffed with a hazelnut chocolate spread filling. It's basically a sweet French toast sandwich.
Ingredients
- French baguette - Cut into thick slices.
- chocolate hazelnut spread - Such as Nutella or store-brand spread.
- eggs - I use large eggs.
- milk - The type of milk you use for French toast can influence the texture and flavor of the dish. Whole milk is the most commonly used type of milk for French toast. Its higher fat content adds richness and creates a creamy custard mixture. Half-and-half or heavy cream will make the French toast even richer and creamier. 2%, 1% or skim milk will result in a lighter French toast.
- white sugar - Or an alternative sweetener.
- butter - To fry the French toast with.
- optional toppings - Powdered sugar and berries or apple slices.

Tweaks
Here are some topping suggestions for your French toast:
- berries
- apple slices
- powdered sugar
- honey
- maple syrup (check out how to make maple syrup here)
You can also mix up this recipe by adding a secondary filling:
- peanut butter - besides adding peanut butter to soup, this is my second favorite way to use it
- jelly
- marshmallow fluff
How to Make it
- Stuff the bread. Heat electric skillet to 300ºF (medium heat). Spread some chocolate hazelnut spread over one slice of French bread and cover with the other slice. Press them together with your hands. Repeat with remaining slices of bread.
- Soak. In a bowl, mix together the eggs, milk and white sugar. Soak the sandwiches in the egg mixture, until they have absorbed the liquid on both sides.
- Cook. Melt the butter in the skillet. Add the sandwiches and cook for around 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Serve. Serve topped with fresh berries or apple slices and powdered sugar, if desired.
