Bite into an earthy, savory dish with this grilled asparagus in foil. This recipe is ready in only 15 minutes and can be grilled alongside the main for an easy and quick dinner!

Grilled asparagus with orange slices on white plate. Honey and orange juice on the side.

Add an easy, healthy side dish to your cookout with this grilled asparagus in super convenient foil-packs.

What's not to love about the flavors? Honey, orange juice and mustard infuse the dish with bold, summery flavors. Orange wedges offer a bright contrast to the dark green and enhance the dish with bright citrus tang.

Grilling the asparagus offers a unique flavor compared to cooking asparagus on the stove or roasting asparagus in the oven, that makes it the perfect summer side dish.

I like to throw them on the grill with bison ribeye steaks and corn on the cob using this tutorial for how to grill corn. Enjoy!

Grilled asparagus in foil packets ingredients labeled.
    • green asparagus - Choose asparagus stalks that are vibrantly green and firm without wilting.
    • olive oil (not pictured) - Whatever kind of olive oil you have on hand is fine.
    • orange juice - Freshly squeezed works best for this recipe!
    • honey - The liquid kind. You can substitute with agave nectar to make this dish vegan.
    • Dijon mustard - Can be whole grain or smooth.

How to Make Grilled Asparagus in Foil

Before you begin, you're going to preheat the grill to medium-high heat and grab 2 large pieces of foil.

Raw asparagus with orange slices on foil.

Step 1. Place half of the asparagus in the center of each foil piece and then drizzle with olive oil. Whisk together the orange juice, honey and mustard and pour it over each. Season and add some orange slices on top.

Step 2. Fold the foil over the asparagus and seal the ends together.

Chef's Note: I like to leave 'handles' on the ends of the foil packets to make it easier to transfer and flip them. You're basically just leaving a few inches unwrapped on each end and then twisting them or folding them over twice so that you have something to grab onto.

Step 3. Place the asparagus foil packs on the grill, close the lid and grill for 5 minutes on each side until fork-tender.

Step 4. Open the foil packets carefully and serve!

    Serving Suggestions

You can throw these vegetables on the grill alongside your favorite protein. If you have vegetarian guests, this dish provides a delicious alternative. Grilled asparagus also makes a great side dish during a camping trip.

Hot, savory dishes pair well with asparagus. Serve this recipe as a side dish alongside salmon, vegetarian crab cakes, pork skewers or marinated steaks. The grill gives the asparagus a lightly charred, smoky flavor that makes it a good barbecue addition.

For extra flavor, add pine nuts or goat cheese to the grilled asparagus before you serve the dish. This also gives the dish an earthy, rustic look.

    Storage Tips

    • Refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible--this recipe might not have meat or dairy, but cooked vegetables can still go bad if you leave them out.
    • Cover the dish with plastic wrap, or better yet, a beeswax wrap, then enjoy the grilled asparagus within 5 days.
    • Throw them on the grill again or frying pan to recapture the hot, smoky flavor.

    Recipe FAQs

Should I precook asparagus before grilling?

I don't find any need to pre-cook asparagus. They cook quickly on the grill in foil packs.

How long to cook asparagus on a gas grill in foil?

It only takes about 10 minutes total, over medium-high heat, flipping the foil pack halfway through cooking.

How do you know when asparagus is done on the grill?

They will have some snap but not be too crunchy (basically fork-tender). You can cook them softer if you prefer.

    Ingredients

    • 1 large bunch green asparagus - ends trimmed (about 1 pound)
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil - divided
    • ¼ cup orange juice - fresh is best
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard - can be full grain or smooth
    • 1 navel orange - sliced thinly
    • salt and pepper - to taste

    Instructions

    • Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Prepare 2 large pieces of foil.
    • Place half of the asparagus in the center of each foil piece. (We are making 2 foil packs because you don't want the asparagus to overlap too much and you need room to fold the foil over.)
      1 large bunch green asparagus
    • Drizzle the olive oil over the asparagus (1 tablespoon in each packet).
      2 tablespoons olive oil
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, honey and mustard. Pour it over the asparagus evenly and season with salt and pepper. Add some orange slices on top.
¼ cup orange juice, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • Fold the foil over the asparagus and seal the ends together.
    • Place the asparagus foil packs on the grill, close the lid and grill for 5 minutes.
    • Carefully flip the packs over and grill for another 5 minutes, or until the asparagus is fork-tender. The cooking time will depend on how thick the stalks are.
    • Open the foil packs carefully to let the steam out. Serve with the orange slices!

    Equipment

    • Outdoor grill
    • Foil

    Notes

    • Honey substitute: You can substitute the honey with agave nectar to make this dish vegan.
    • Leftover storage: Refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible. Cover the dish with plastic wrap, or better yet, a beeswax wrap, then enjoy the grilled asparagus within 5 days.
    • Foil packets: I like to leave 'handles' on the ends of the foil packets to make it easier to transfer and flip them. You're basically just leaving a few inches unwrapped on each end and then twisting them or folding them over twice so that you have something to grab onto.
    • Reheating: Throw them on the grill again or frying pan to recapture the hot, smoky flavor.
