Imagine sitting in front of a fireplace with a hot glass of electric skillet mulled wine. This classic Christmas drink, even more classic than a Brandy Alexander cocktail, starts with a base of red wine that's flavored with cinnamon, sugar, spices and a freshly sliced orange. When you first take a sip, it warms you from the inside out.

It's the perfect accompaniment to a night of singing Christmas carols, choosing a Christmas tree from the local tree farm or stringing holiday lights on the front porch.

It's one of our family holiday traditions to sip on a warm cup of mulled wine. Other holiday drinks my family and I enjoy every year are this cranberry Moscow mule and Swedish Glögg drink--which is very similar to this mulled wine.

    Ingredients & Tools

    • 1 bottle dry red wine (750 ml)
    • fresh orange
    • whole cloves
    • cinnamon sticks
    • star anise
    • sugar
    • brandy
    • optional garnishes: - dehydrated orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise

You will also need an electric skillet.

    How to Make it

    1. Combine. Combine all ingredients in the electric skillet.
    2. Simmer. Cover and gently simmer the wine at 200ºF for 30 minutes. Don't let it come to a boil (If it is bubbling too hard in the skillet, you can turn it down to warm).
    3. Strain. Use a strainer to remove the solids.
    4. Serve. Serve warm in heatproof glasses or mugs. If desired, you can garnish with extra dehydrated orange slices, cinnamon sticks and star anise.

    Tips & Tweaks

This delicious mulled wine recipe is sure to be the hit of your holiday get-together. Make a large batch and serve it with dinner, or serve it as a hot after-dinner drink that your friends and family members can enjoy around the fireplace.

If you're planning on an outdoor activity like making a snowman or choosing a Christmas tree, have a batch of mulled wine ready so you can all warm up afterward.

This wine goes well with hot, savory dishes like a Christmas ham, roasted vegetables and hot mincemeat pies. With sweet sugar and spicy cinnamon, this wine also goes well with classic Christmas desserts like gingerbread cake pops and shortbread cookies. This Christmas cookies recipe is another great option with their crispiness and festive colors!

There's something about the taste of cinnamon and cloves that makes you want to snuggle up in front of the fireplace and wait for Santa to arrive. The kids might not be able to try it, but you can try making a non-alcoholic version like I do with my non-alcoholic virgin Moscow mule recipe. Just use fruit juice instead of wine.

The garnishes are optional, but they're highly recommended. Adding orange slices, cinnamon sticks and star anise will give your drink a fun, festive appearance that's perfect for Instagram. Plus, you can eat the orange slices to enjoy the delicious taste of fresh citrus infused with mulled wine.

    Storage & Reheating

    • Fridge: Once cooled, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
    • Reheat: Reheat it back up in the electric skillet on warm or low heat.
