What is Passion Fruit?
Passion fruit is a small tropical fruit with a tough outer layer and a juicy, seed-filled center.
Its flavor is almost like a mix of pineapple, mango, and citrus but overall it's totally unique—unlike anything I've ever had before. The pulp is bright yellow or orange, and it’s filled with edible black seeds that are encased in juicy sacs.
The most common varieties are:
- Purple passion fruit: Just as it sounds, it has a dark purple skin and aromatic pulp.
- Yellow passion fruit: It's larger, with bright yellow skin and a slightly more acidic flavor.
How to Pick Ripe Passion Fruit
To make sure you're only using the sweetest, most flavorful passion fruit in these recipes, you are going to want to look for:
- Wrinkled skin: Slightly shriveled or dimpled skin is actually a good sign—it means the fruit is ripe and the pulp inside is sweet and flavorful. Smooth skin usually means it’s still underripe.
- Heaviness: A ripe passion fruit should feel heavy, due to all of the juicy pulp inside! Avoid ones with soft spots or mold.
- Deep color: For purple varieties, look for a rich, dark purple. For yellow ones, a deep golden yellow is ideal.
