🥘Ingredients
- heavy whipping cream - Heavy cream for whipping has between 36 – 40 percent milk fat.
- powdered sugar - Also called icing sugar, powdered sugar has many jobs to do in this recipe. It is used to sweeten, thicken and stabilize the whipped cream.
- grenadine syrup - You could simply dye your whipped cream with food coloring, but grenadine adds a sweet, fruity and unique flavor to the lightness of the cream.
Homemade grenadine. If you want to make real grenadine syrup at home, all you need is sugar and pomegranate juice, although some manufacturers use blackcurrant and other fruit juices. When you're done, you'll have a handy ingredient for desserts and your favorite beverages.
Commercial grenadine. You can buy grenadine in grocery stores. Mass manufacturers often make grenadine from high fructose corn syrup with no actual fruit content.
Your choice. Both versions can work in this recipe (the color will differ), but if you are looking for something with natural fruit flavor, check the ingredient list.
🥣How to Make Grenadine Whipped Cream
Step 1. Add Ingredients to bowl & whip. Add the heavy cream, grenadine and powdered sugar to a large glass measuring cup or bowl. Whip the cream mixture using an electric hand mixer on a low speed until it begins to thicken.
Step 2. Continue whipping. Higher the speed and continue whipping until stiff peaks form.
Chef's Note: Be careful not to over-whip the cream! The cream will end up separating if you go too far.
Step 3. Serve. The grenadine whipped cream is now ready to use!
🍰Serving Suggestions
- Whipped cream usually appears on desserts, but you can garnish sweet alcoholic drinks with a dollop of whipped cream, fruit slices and fruit salad.
- You can also brighten non-alcoholic drinks such as Italian sodas, fruit smoothies (like my blackberry smoothie bowl) and milkshakes.
- Use it as a dip for your favorite fruits.
💭Top Tip
Make sure the cream is nice and chilled before whipping. You can also chill the whisk attachments and bowl for best results. This keeps the fat in whipping cream cold, which in turn results in light and fluffy whipped cream.
❓Recipe FAQs
Whipped cream needs to be stored covered in the refrigerator. It is best used within one day to retain its stiff peaks, however, it can last up to one week.
While many people believe that grenadine is made from cherries (possibly because the Shirley Temple drink combines grenadine and maraschino cherries and the juices look similar) it is actually made with pomegranates.
