Have you decided to go on a health kick lately? If so, you're probably interested in adding more vegetable-based snacks and side dishes to your meals. Below I go over how to make crispy kale chips in the oven so that you can enjoy delicious vegetable chips at home with only 2 ingredients plus some sea salt!

    Kale chips in glass container.

So when you're out grocery shopping, don't forget to throw in that perfect head of kale into your shopping cart and be sure you have sea salt and some olive oil on hand.

I like to serve them with a chipotle bison burger but they're also great as an easy mid-day or evening keto snack on their own! They are also vegan/vegetarian which will help keep all of your guests happy.

    Ingredients

Kale chip ingredients prepped and labeled.

You only need 2 ingredients plus sea salt for these crispy kale chips.

    • fresh kale - Choose kale with vibrant, firm leaves, avoiding any with slime, yellowing, or bruising. You could even try making these chips with baby kale.
    • olive oil - You can use refined olive oil or a combination to save on cost since we are cooking with it anyway.

*Check recipe card for ingredient amounts.

Pro Tip: Make sure you rinse the kale and then dry it really well with paper towel or a clean kitchen towel to ensure a crispy, crunchy kale chip.

    Recipe Steps

Kale being cut with scissors into bowl.

Step #1. Cut the kale into pieces. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the kale leaves from the stems and then cut into pieces. Place them in a large bowl.

Kale in bowl with olive oil.

Step #2. Mix with olive oil. Add the olive oil and mix until all of the leaves are coated.

👩🏻‍🍳Chef's Note: Keep in mind they will shrink quite a bit in the oven so keep the kale pieces fairly large. I learned my lesson the first time I made these and the chips ended up being so tiny!

Step #3. Season. Sprinkle the kale pieces with sea salt.

Step #4. Transfer to baking sheet. Spread the kale out onto a baking sheet.

Step #5. Bake. Bake for 10 minutes. Turn them over using tongs and bake for another 10-15 minutes, until the kale chips are crispy.

Step #6. Serve. Remove from oven. Add a bit more salt if desired and serve.

    Serving Suggestions

    • You can make a burger (like my recipe for how to grill frozen burgers) taste extra great when crispy, kale chips are added to the mix. In fact, you'll find that your dried kale chips can be added to almost anything you want to add extra crunch to.
    • Throw them on top of a salad for extra crunch, such as my kimchi salad or salmon chickpea salad.
    • Or, simply snack on them on their own.
    • If you're looking to make this kale snack, try them with different seasonings. In our house, we think adding sea salt is the best way to enjoy them, but you can get adventurous and pick and choose what type of ingredients you want to add to your kale chips.
    • Do you like garlic? Or is Parmesan cheese your favorite topping? Like a smaller, milder bite? Either of these choices could make your chips taste even more delicious!

    Recipe FAQs

How do you store kale chips?

Once cooled, transfer your chips to an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 1 week. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months in a freezer bag; squeeze as much air out as you can.

How do you keep kale chips crispy?

Let your chips cool completely before storing and this should help them to stay crispy. You can also place a piece of paper towel on the inside of the container to help suck up any moisture.

Why are my homemade kale chips bitter?

Make sure the kale is rinsed before using to help remove some bitterness. You could also try a different cooking oil besides olive oil.
