    What are Aphrodisiac Foods?

They are various foods and drinks that are believed to increase sexual desire when consumed, such as oysters, caviar and chocolate. The word aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite (Goddess of Love). This can be due to the feel-good effect of the food, the vitamin and mineral content, placebo effect, or even what it looks like.

    Aphrodisiac Recipes List

    1
    Cuban lunch chocolate bars stacked.
    Cuban Lunch
This super-easy chocolate bar recipe only requires two ingredients, one being a well-known aphrodisiac: dark chocolate. It's a copycat version of an old Canadian chocolate bar that was once discontinued but revived due to its popularity. Don't rush this one, let it melt in your mouth slowly and enjoy every bite.

Watermelon salad with basil in black salad bowl.
    Watermelon Basil Salad
Watermelon is considered an aphrodisiac, due to its possible viagra-like effects in which it relaxes blood vessels. This is thanks to the phyto nutrient it contains called citrulline. This watermelon salad along with an easy, no-added-sugar, watermelon dressing, is a delicious and healthy way to get an abundance of watermelon.

Grilled jalapeño poppers on black serving board.
    Grilled Jalapeño Poppers
Smoky, spicy and stimulating, these endorphin-releasing grilled jalapeño poppers are a great way to heat things up, and not just for your taste buds. One of my favorite aphrodisiac recipes, this is a total comfort food appetizer with smoky bacon, spicy pepper and a cheesy filling.

    Strawberry parfait in stemmed glasses.
    Strawberry Parfait Dessert
Strawberries, another commonly known aphrodisiac, are abundant and fresh in this strawberry parfait. It's an easy, no-bake aphrodisiac dessert that you can whip up in only 15 minutes. It's also spiked with a little Grand Marnier for a more sophisticated flavor experience.

    5
Grilled cubed mango on wooden skewers.
    Marinated Grilled Mango
Mango skewers are soaked in a honey and dark rum-based marinade before a light char on the grill. It's not only the mango but the honey in this recipe that has long been thought to be an aphrodisiac. Plus, who doesn't love sweet, tropical finger food?!

    6
Roasted white asparagus with capers and fresh dill.
    White Asparagus
If you're looking for a romantic, aphrodisiac side dish that's also easy and quick to make, this roasted white asparagus is it! White asparagus, which has a lighter flavor than green, is roasted with simple, fresh ingredients like olive oil, pine nuts and dill.

Grilled avocado halves stuffed with pico de gallo on cutting board.
    Stuffed Avocado
This grilled avocado is a vegan, aphrodisiac recipe that's easy to cook up on the grill in only a few minutes. It's stuffed with a fresh, homemade pico de gallo.

    Pistachio Smoothie
    SoSmoothie
    Pistachio Smoothie
Snacking on pistachios is delicious, but an even better way to enjoy them is blending them into a smoothie! This green pistachio smoothie is creamy, nutty and perfectly sweet. Pistachios are known to promote sexual vitality by stimulating blood flow thanks to their amino acid L-arginine content.

    Easy Baked Oysters

    Easy Baked Oysters
Oysters are probably the most well-known aphrodisiac and this recipe showcases this briny shellfish on a half shell with Parmesan, cheddar and seasonings. They are baked in the shell for an elegant appetizer for two.

    Baked Figs with Goat Cheese
I wanted to find a recipe that uses the whole fig to get the full effect and these baked figs with goat cheese look and taste amazing! This 15 minute appetizer would be lovely with a glass of red wine such as a pinot noir, shiraz or merlot.

    11
    Stuffed Artichokes
    Noshing With The Nolands
    Stuffed Artichokes
These whole artichokes are stuffed with complementary ingredients like Parmesan, garlic and fresh herbs and baked in the oven for a sexy and delicious appetizer. Artichokes have been considered an aphrodisiac for ages, but in the 1500s, apparently women weren't allowed to consume them. Luckily, both men and women can enjoy these artichokes equally.

    12
Lemon basil pasta with chicken and Parmesan cheese on plate.
    Lemon Basil Pasta
While this recipe doesn't feature any classic aphrodisiacs, there is something truly romantic about a plate of spaghetti, whether it's the twirling of the noodles or sharing a bite that leads to an accidental kiss, just like the unforgettable scene in Lady and the Tramp.

    Fun and Flirty Drinks

A glass of wine or champagne can be a great accompaniment to a romantic dinner. Cocktails can also turn up the fun and set a playful vibe. Try:

    1. Frozen Watermelon Basil Cocktail
    2. Hibiscus Vodka Cocktail
    3. Spring White Wine Sangria
    4. Homemade Frozen Margarita
    5. Captain Morgan Mai Tai

    Aphrodisiac Fruits

Some of the top fruits thought to be aphrodisiacs include strawberries, watermelon, bananas, apples, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, pomegranates, cherries and figs.

    Joss' Tips

Don't solely focus on what you are eating, but how you eat it! Watching someone slowly enjoy a banana, pop some cherries in their mouth or nibble on some chocolate-dipped strawberries can be very sensual. And there is something undeniably sexy about feeding someone these treats yourself.

Try these flambéed bananas and sweet bourbon whipped cream as well as how to cut watermelon for a party. This strawberry candy recipe is perfect for Valentine's Day.

Avoid face-covering saucy foods like chicken wings and ribs or foods that fall apart like sloppy tacos and burritos. That's not so hot.

    Aphrodisiac FAQs

Do they really work and how?

The short answer is: sometimes! While there isn't any real hard proof or magic involved, the placebo effect and the naturally seductive look of some foods can come into play and steer the mind in a sexy direction. The aphrodisiac foods might also contain nutrients that can support sexual health.

Which herbs and spices boost desire?

Some herbs and spices that can possibly help to get you in the mood include gingko, ginseng, maca, saffron and cinnamon.

How do oysters set the mood?

Oysters are high in zinc, which is essential for testosterone levels. It's also a delicacy food that is slippery and soft; that might have a little something to do with it.

How does chocolate turn up the heat?

Chocolate is a feel-good food because of its phenylethylamine and tryptophan levels, the latter being a hormone released when someone is attracted to another person and after climaxing.

    Are mussels an aphrodisiac?

Mussels, just like oysters, are often considered an aphrodisiac, so if you love mussels more than oysters, you're in luck.

Pick your favorite, grab a drink and let the flavors do the flirting. These recipes are all about having fun and indulging a little.
