In this tutorial, I will show you how to grill pineapple slices perfectly so you can make your favorite foods even more delicious. These tangy pineapple slices are marinated in ginger, honey, and orange juice, making them the perfect sweet addition to your barbecue as a side or topping.
Grilled pineapple slices add a juicy, smoky, tropical twist to many dishes or they can be eaten on their own as a summer snack. I even use them to make this grilled pineapple juice!
They taste amazing on top of my pulled pork barbecue sandwiches or diced up into these halibut fish tacos. The tanginess of the pineapple contrasts beautifully with the savory flavor of perfectly cooked barbecued meat.

Ingredients
- pineapple slices - You can find pre-sliced pineapple or buy a large pineapple and skin, core and slice it yourself.
- orange juice - I like to use freshly squeezed or frozen from concentrate without added sugar.
- honey - Liquid honey can be substituted with agave nectar for a vegan option or even brown sugar.
- ginger - For some kick.

Instructions
Step 1. Prepare marinade. Whisk the orange juice, honey and ginger together in a small bowl.
Step 2. Marinate the pineapple. Place the pineapple slices inside a resealable bag, and pour the marinade inside. Seal the bag and let it sit to marinate for at least 2 hours (so that the pineapple really absorbs the juice).
Step 3. Preheat the grill to medium heat.
Gas grill: Heat grill to medium. Turn off half of the burners for an indirect and direct heat source.
Charcoal: Heat the coals of the grill and place them on one side of the barbecue, to have a zone of direct heat and another of indirect heat in order to have an area to keep the pineapple warm after grilling.
Step 4. Add slices to grill. Place the pineapple slices on the direct heat side of the grill. Cook them until you see grill marks on the bottom (it will take around 10 minutes).
Step 5. Brush with marinade. Halfway through cooking, you can brush the pineapple slices with the leftover marinade.
Step 6. Flip and grill the other side. Flip them over with tongs and grill for another 10 minutes, or until they are softened and have grill marks on both sides.
Step 7. Remove from grill. Remove from the grill and serve!
Chef's Note: Over the direct heat, you will get the beautiful marks of the grill. If you want to keep them warm until serving time, you can place them over the indirect heat side of the grill.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve the pineapple slices as a snack on their own.
- Chop them up and add them on top of ice cream (like my banana nice cream) or other desserts.
- Add chopped grilled pineapple to a fruit salad.
- Serve them as a side for grilled proteins like burgers, ribs, steak and meats marinated with jerk sauce like chicken or these jerk pork tenderloin kebabs.
- You can also add them to tacos, sandwiches and burgers.
- Although they taste great just the way they are, sometimes I like to add a little red or green tomatillo hot sauce to give the pineapple an extra kick of flavor.
Tips
- Prepping the pineapple. Use a pineapple corer to peel, core and slice your pineapple quickly and easily!
- Slice size. If you're using the slices to add to sandwiches and burgers, try to keep your slices on the thinner side so they don't elevate the height of your sandwich too much.
- Marinade. You can always switch up the marinade to suit your tastes or try something new. Try the marinade I use for my grilled mango here.
Grilled Pineapple FAQs
I like to skin and core the pineapple and then cut it into ¼" to ½" slices. The slices are large enough that they won't fall through the grates and they're easy to flip. You can always cut them into smaller pieces later if needed.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 5 days.
Pineapple tastes great fresh, but it's even better grilled. As it cooks on the grill, it becomes caramelized, smoky and even sweeter. Grilling just makes it taste amazing!
